Colombo (News 1st); The village of Elewela in Mahiyanganaya is yet another village in Sri Lanka battered by the human-elephant conflict.

On Monday (04) locals decided to stage a protest along the Mahiyanganaya - Ampara main road demanding authorities to take measures to solve the issue.

Interestingly, when the protestors were moving towards the Mahiyanganaya bridge a herd of elephants was seen roaming close to the premises.

'These elephants move into the Minipe reserve at night,' said one local man alleging the rulers have done nothing to solve the issue.

Another local man said all his cultivations and paddy fields were destroyed by encroaching wild elephants and authorities have turned a blind eye to their pleas.

A discussion is to take place with the Mahiyangana Divisional Secretary on the matter on Wednesday (06).
