COLOMBO (News 1st): Adequate water resources are available for cultivation during the Maha season, the Department of Irrigation said.
The water levels at the reservoirs under the purview of the department have risen to 52 percent, D. Abeysiriwardena of the Irrigation Management Division at the Irrigation Department said on Tuesday (Dec. 29).
According to Abeysiriwardena, at the beginning of the Maha season in October, the water level stood at 38 percent.
An approximated 700,000 acres of land is expected to be cultivated during the Maha season.
Measures are underway to release sufficient volumes of water for agricultural purposes so that farmers can engage in cultivation activities conveniently, the Irrigation Department further added.
