Colombo (News 1st); The Public Utilities Commission will not be abolished'' said Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardena today. '' We will amend that Act and address several loopholes to improve the efficiency of the system, that would ultimately benefit the general public,'' he added. The proposed abolition of the Public Utilities Commission has stirred controversy across multiple platforms. Civil activists allege that the underlying motive behind the move is fraudulent. Expressing his views on the matter, Minister of Transport Gamini Lokuge added that the government will initiate an alternative program. ''If there is a bottleneck somewhere, we should change it and that's what we are doing'' he said.   Sanjeewa Dhammika, the Secretary of the Electricity Users' Association alleged that the move is being carried out with the motive of supporting several businesses or foreign nations. This sentiment was reinforced by Janasetha Peramuna Leader Ven. Battaramule Seelarathana Thero, who stated that prices can never be increased through the influence of external forces when the Commission is in place.
