Heavy showers expected across the country

COLOMBO (News1st): Heavy showers up to approximately four inches (100 millimetres) coupled with strong winds are expected in many parts of the country, forecasters said Tuesday. Heavy falls above 100mm can be expected in the Eastern and Uva provinces and in the districts pf Polonnaruwa, Matale and Nuwara-Eliya, the meteorology department said in a forecast. "Other parts of the country may experience showers after 1 pm," Chathushka Premachandra, the duty meteorologist told News 1st. She predicted that strong winds up to 50 kmph can be experienced in the Hambantota district and the central region, and also in the seas surrounding the country. Authorities have issued landslide warnings to five divisional secretariats including Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, and Badulla due to the inclement weather. More than 100 acres of paddy fields have been inundated in the Polonnaruwa district, New1st's correspondent reported.
