COLOMBO (News 1st): A seven-year-old girl and a one-year-old girl were killed in a road accident involving a motorcycle on Friday night (Dec. 04) in the Egodauyana police area along the Panadura-Moratuwa road, Sri Lanka Police said.
According to Police Spokesperson - DIG Ajith Rohana, the expectant mother of the two children, aged 23-years who sustained critical injuries in the accident was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.
The injured mother is undergoing surgery at the moment, the Police Spokesperson said on Saturday evening (Dec. 05).
The 20-year-old rider of the motorcycle who was arrested has been remanded until the 18th of December after being produced at the Moratuwa Magistrate's Court.
The Egodauyana Police is conducting further investigations.
"Based on the investigation report, it has been revealed that the rider was arrested by Panadura Police two weeks ago and charged at Panadura Court on neglectful and reckless driving. The suspect had pleaded guilty to the charges, and accordingly, he was fined Rs. 15,000," the Deputy Police Chief further noted.
While observing that especially at night, young children and adolescents tend to drive and ride motorcycles as a habit, leading to such accidents due to reckless driving, DIG Ajith Rohana said stern action will be taken against riders and motorists who drive in the night in a reckless and neglectful manner.
