Colombo (News 1st); 109 inmates at the Welikada, Old Bogambara, and Matara prisons have tested positive for COVID-19, said the Department of Prisons.
Commissioner of Prisons Administration/Rehabilitation and Skill Development Chandana Ekanayake speaking to News 1st said 71 cases were reported from the Welikada Prison.
63 of them are female inmates while 07 others are male inmates.
Further, a Police Special Task Officer assigned to prison security details was also exposed to COVID-19.
In addition, 07 inmates at the Bogambara Prison and a female inmate at the Matara Prison, who was transferred from Colombo, had also tested positive for COVID-19.
He said PCR tests were carried out on three separate occasions from the 04th to the 08th of November, and the results revealed 109 positive cases.
All of these cases have been placed at respective sites to undergo quarantine.
