COLOMBO (News1st): Samagi Jana Balawegaya expressed their views about the 20th Amendment to the Constitution at a media briefing convened by the party today. Parliamentarian representing SJB - Imtiaz Bakeer Markar said that he would like to know from the Prime Minister as to whether cabinet approval was granted to the 11-page document submitted by the Attorney General to the Supreme Court, regarding the proposed amendments presented by the Government to the original Amendment. He further queried as to who apprised the Attorney General that these amendments will be proposed and whether Prime Minister - Mahinda Rajapaksa is aware of it? Bakeer Markar noted that the Government is attempting to hinder the process of a debate being initiated in society. Adding further he said that this is pure greed for power by the ruling faction. "How many of those who supported the 19th is with them today? Can they reverse the democratic progress which was made while upholding their dignity? Can they allow for a dictatorial rule to govern the country?" added MP Imtiaz Bakeer Markar. SJB MP - Hirunika Premachandra said that she can remember a certain erudite person who worked to formulate the 19th Amendment and that person understands the gravity of the current situation. Adding to that she said, "Once they use people, they discard them and so on. Wimal Weerawansa is facing that now. If he had not done the amount of work he did, neither Mahinda nor Gotabaya would be there."
