Video Trial to commence from prisons; cases of selected inmates will be taken up

Colombo (News 1st); The Department of Prisons has decided to use video technology to assist with cases filed against incarcerated inmates.

All Prisons Commissioners were instructed to make available the necessary facilities, said the Department of Prisons.

Accordingly, the Department of Prisons would report facts to the respective judges on individual inmates and cases will be taken up on selected inmates via video technology.

The Department of Prisons announced on Monday (05) visitors will no longer be permitted to enter prisons until further notice.

Commissioner (Administration) of the Department of Prisons Chandana Ekanayake speaking to News 1st said the decision was made taking into account the present situation in the country and to protect the lives of the prisoners.

“Prisons are considered as high-risk areas. If an inmate contracts the virus it would lead to a disastrous situation,” said Ekanayake.
