Concerns raised over new flood wall in Kelani river

COLOMBO (News1st): Concerns have been raised over the construction of a new flood wall on the Kelani River, amidst warnings that water levels could rise above the construction, during rains. A flood wall constructed several years ago on the bank of the river in the Kelaniya area had been demolished recently to create space for the construction of a new wall. However, concerns have been raised on the feasibility of the project, as water levels are tipped to rise above the construction during showers. Only a portion of the new wall has been constructed so far. As a temporary remedy to this impending danger, several bags of sand have been lined up on the river bank, acting as the remaining portion of the new wall. Questions have been raised regarding the purpose of demolishing the old wall to make way for the new construction.
