Colombo (News 1st); The Ex-Superintendent of the Negombo Prison Anurudhdha Sampayo and 03 others charged with engaging in various malpractices within the Negombo Prison were released on strict bail conditions on Monday (31) by Negombo Chief Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya.
The other three suspects are Negombo Chief Jailor Sarath Bandara, Acting Jailor Nishantha Senaratne, and Second-tier Jailor Kalinga Kaluaggala.
The 04 suspects were barred from traveling overseas and were ordered to appear at the Criminal Investigations Department by the Chief Magistrate on the first and third Sunday of every month after placing bail.
Further, the suspects were ordered by the Chief Magistrate to refrain from obstructing the witnesses from the prosecution and investigation officers.
In addition, the Chief Magistrate ordered the suspects to appear in court on the 04th of September.
When the matter was called on Monday (31) Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris appearing for the Attorney General pointed out to the court, although the HQI of Negombo in his notes had recorded Anurudhdha Sampayo was arrested, it was not so, adding Sampayo was not arrested but a charade played by both sides.
He said it clear from the footage and images obtained from the CCTV cameras installed at the Kurunegala Vidyalaya, opposite which it was said Anurudhdha Sampayo was purportedly arrested.
Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris informed the court the Store Keeper of the Negombo Prison Vidyananda Samarawickrama will be named as the 05th suspect in the case.
On Monday (31) the Attorney General's Department released CCTV footage of the purported arrest of Anurudhdha Sampayo.
