AG says draft circular to control COVID-19 during the election is contrary to law

The Technical Committee to eradicate COVID-19 convened at the National Election Commission today. Member of the Technical Committee and Colombo District Chairman of the PHI Union - Doctor Wajira Dassnayake expressed the following views to the media. Meanwhile, a silent protest was held in the Chilaw Town in support of the trade union action launched by the PHIs. The trade union action was launched by the PHI Union citing that the gazette issued to implement the quarantine regulations is unfair on them. News 1st tried to contact the Minister of Health - Pavithra Wanniarachchi with regards to the ongoing trade union action launched by the PHI Union. However, our attempts proved futile. According to the Attorney General the circular that has been drafted which includes instructions given to Public Health Inspectors to curb COVID-19 at the time of the General Election is illegal. The AG noted that According to the law, that authority is vested with the public health inspectors.
