COLOMBO (News1st): An opposition politician has accused the country's leaders of selling the country's assets and causing environmental destruction.
"Thousands of acres of land near the Ulhitiya Reservoir was given to the Dole company," Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the leader of the National Peoples Power said.
He told a rally that the country has failed to embark on a new journey for the last 72 years.
Dissanayake blamed the government of abolishing the sand transport permit system, before court ordered police to arrest suspects transporting sand without permits.
"To repay the sand racketeers who helped them to garner more votes, they scraped off the sand transport permit system," the NPP leader told a rally.
"While the government is trying to destroy the environment, the people are prompted to go to court and prevent environmental destruction".
The NPP leader said that the country's rulers have always paid attention towards their families and personal gains, and not the people.
