COLOMBO (News1st): Tensions arose in Angulana after a police officer involved in shooting a man to death recently was not produced in court on Thursday.
On July 11, a police officer had opened fire at a person at a roadblock, following a confrontation while he was on duty with two other police officers.
The three officers linked to the incident have been interdicted from their services.
"The police is attempting to justify this," S. Ranagala, the victim's lawyer said following a hearing at the Moratuwa Magistrate's Court.
He added that the eyewitnesses must have been brought before court, instead of being summoned by the police.
Residents who obstructed the road opposite the court in anger of the court proceeding gathered outside the Angulana police station.
"A group in this area had attacked the police using stones," Deshabandu Tennakoon, the Senior DIG of the Western Province who visited the area said.
He added that a mistake had taken place while the police had recorded statements from witnesses as they were brought in a police vehicle in a similar way to arresting a suspect.
"After witness statements are recorded on the 30th, the judge will issue an order for the arrest. The police will then implement the order," the Senior DIG added.
06 people including three women were arrested on Thursday evening for causing damage to public property by hurling stones at the Angulana Police causing damages.
