Manhunt underway to locate hit-and-run tipper truck driver

Colombo (News 1st); A massive manhunt is underway to locate and arrest a tipper truck driver responsible for running over a group of police officers in Kirinda on Monday night.

Sri Lanka Police said 06 teams are engaged in the man-hunt and the tipper truck was discovered Tuesday afternoon.

One Police Constable died in the incident and another two police constables were hospitalized due to the serious nature of their injuries.

Police officers were on duty in the Kirinda Town in Hakmana last night to inspect vehicles and at around 11 PM had signaled down a Tipper Truck to stop for inspection.

However, the Tipper Truck had refused to stop and sped past the check-point.

Police said the officers had thereafter radioed the next check-point about the speeding Tipper Truck and those offices had chased it down.

When the Tipper Truck was eventually stopped at a Police checkpoint at the 13th Mile Post in Kongala along the Matara - Hakmana Road, personnel who were chasing after the truck arrived on site.

Police Officers had warned the Tipper Truck driver for reckless driving and issued a temporary license to the driver.

According to Sri Lanka Police, the Tipper Truck which then went off towards Hakmana returned at excessive speed 10 minutes later, heading towards Matara.

It was then the officers were run over at the police check-point.
