COLOMBO (News1st): A leopard was trapped in a snare in the central town of Ginigathhena, worsening fears of vulnerable habitats in the country. The leopard, a six-year old female that was six feet in length, was rescued by wildlife and military officers on Sunday, after being notified by villagers. An estate employee who is suspected to have set-up the snare was arrested and is due to be produced to the Hatton Magistrates Court. At least four leopards have been caught in snare traps after the death of a black leopard that was trapped in late May, sparking outrage in the country. Environmentalists have warned that leopards could be vulnerable to snares that traps an animal around its neck or the body using a noose made usually by wire or a strong string.
