Colombo (News 1st): Rampant erosion in the Oluvil seashore has severely affected residents in Ampara. Students of the South Eastern University and residents of the Palamunai, Addalaichenai staged a protest demanding solutions.
Over 150 acres of land were subjected to this coastal erosion. Residents charge that around thirty thousand coconut trees have been washed to the sea.
Palamunai Area was turned into a Fisheries Harbor in 2008. Locals allege that environmental destruction took over right after at the Oluvil seashore. Many lands including 30 acres of South Eastern University have been destroyed due to this.
Fishing boats and equipment of fishermen have been damaged paralyzing the fishing industry in the area. Due to the intrusion of seawater in the coastal belt of these areas, fishermen cannot take their fishing boats to the shore.
Locals and university students request the authorities to take immediate action in this regard.
