COLOMBO (News 1st) - Representatives from the opposition as well as from the ruling faction urge the government to take legal action against the perpetrators behind the Central Bank Bond Scam.
Rose Fernando, Katana Electoral Organizer to the UNP noted that everybody expected President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to bring the bond scam culprits before the law and it has been already a month and he had not.
Journalist: The leader of your party is also on the list.
Fernando stated that it does not matter who is involved and must be arrested. She added that a forensic report on the Central Bank bonds for a number of years has been prepared and it also includes what Mahinda Rajapaksa did when he was the Finance Minister.
She shared that if it proves he is corrupt he too should be arrested.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka People's Party who supported Gotabaya Rajapaksa during the Presidential Election, convened a media briefing today (December 29).
Asanka Nawaratne, Leader of Sri Lanka People's Party noted that the Commission's report on the Central Bank has been issued and it has not been made public yet.
"We ask the President to punish the perpetrators as per the content and the recommendations in the report" he added.
The politicians and activists are urging the authorities to take relevant legal action with regard to the bond scam that occurred in 2015, soon after the government of good governance was elected to office.
However, the second bond scam took place in 2016.
Although bonds were called for a requirement of Rs. 40 billion, it ended up with a bid of Rs. 77 billion.
The delay and lack of attention to the second bond scam indicates that the second bond scam was more deliberate and thorough than the first.
