COLOMBO (News 1st) - Vasudeva Nanayakkara, a leader of a party affiliated with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna says it would be crucial for them to form an alliance with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in the upcoming presidential election.
Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Leader of Democratic Left Front noted that although they would secure victory in the election it was vital for the SLFP to join to enjoy the victory. He confirmed that proposals have been made by the SLFP regarding the formation of alliance and some of them were difficult for them to seek common ground.
When it was questioned whether one of them was where the current president would stand after the victory, he noted that he does not know for sure and he believes that the current president should be appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, the Socialist Peoples' Front convened a press briefing in Colombo today and Prof. Tissa Witharana noted that following the presidential election true political power would lie with Mahinda Rajapaksa.
He added that he would be able to attend the cabinet due to the 19th amendment however he would not be able to hold a ministerial position.
