Wellamada faculties of Ruhuna University closed indefinitely

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The administration of the University of Ruhuna has decided to close all faculties located at its Wellamadama premises indefinitely. The decision comes following discussions between Vice-Chancellor Professor Sujeewa Amarasena and all the faculty heads. Prof. Sujeewa Amarasena, the Vice Chancellor of the University said the academic activities were hindered due to the ongoing strike. The non-academic staff of the Ruhuna University commenced a strike against the students as they assaulted several of their members in a dispute yesterday (July 09). News 1st correspondent added that the students had attacked the security personnel with stones. The university is secured and guarded by the police at the moment. The Security Officer of the University of Ruhuna noted that around 300 students obstructed the administration building making it impossible for the staff members to reach the fingerprint machines to mark attendance. Consequently, several staff members held discussions with the student leaders and requested the students to refrain from obstructing their duties. He went on to note that however, a group of students had forcefully removed the staff members away from the building and had used profanity against them. Students at the scene expressed a contradictory opinion opposing the views shared by the officials. The student shared that the Vice Chancellor of the Ruhunu University has shamelessly assigned his thugs to attack the students of the university. He finally added that the officials are using both thugs and security personnel to assault the students.
