COLOMBO (News 1st) - The World Health Organization stated that 4300 Sri Lankans die every year due to air pollution. According to the data gathered by the organization, air pollution accounts for more than 3 million deaths annually worldwide.
Therefore, the World Environment Day which falls today(June 05) has adopted the theme "Air pollution" for this year. The Environment Day celebrations in Sri Lanka coincide with the World Environment Day celebrations to be held tomorrow(June 05) under the auspices of President, Maithripala Sirisena.
The Central Environmental Authority noted that 60% of polluted air in Sri Lanka are due to automobile fumes. An official at the authority added that the industrial sector adds 10% to the air pollution in Sri Lanka while 8% is added by households.
The Central Environmental Authority went on to say that they would introduce new regulations to minimize air pollution in the industrial sector.
