REUTERS: The poster for the 72nd Cannes Film Festival was unveiled outside the Palais des Festival in the early morning of Sunday (May 12). The official poster for this year's festival pays tribute to late director Agnes Varda, featuring an action shot of the filmmaker taken while she made her first feature film - 1955's "La Pointe Courte."
Varda, who passed away in Paris in March at the age of 90, began her career as a still photographer before becoming one of the leading voices and mavericks of the Left Bank Cinema and French New Wave. Her films focused on the issues faced by ordinary people, such as harvesters ("The Gleaners and I", 2000), drifters ("Vagabond", 1985) and on women in particular "Cleo from 5 to 7" - which premiered in competitions in Cannes in 1962.
The 72nd Cannes Film Festival, running from May 14 to 25, is due to kick off on Tuesday (May 14) with Jim Jarmusch's latest film, zombie extravaganza "The Dead Don't Die". Other big films in the line up this year include Quentin Tarantino's highly anticipated "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" starring Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio and films from directors Pedro Almodovar, Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne and Ken Loach amongst many.
