Colombo (News 1st): The 26th memorial ceremony of late President Ranasinghe Premadasa was held at the Premadasa statue near the Hulftsdorp Courts Complex, today (May 1). President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, family members and relatives of the Premadasa family attended the event. Ranasinghe Premadasa commenced his political journey from the Colombo Municipal Council and subsequently served the nation as an MP, minister, prime minister and finally as the second executive President of Sri Lanka. The late Premadasa introduced the Uda Gammana program, the revolutionary concept of timely value to the local housing industry, which earned praise from both local and international communities. He was also the pioneer in providing free school uniforms for children and initiated several welfare programs to uplift the lives of the poor. Ranasinghe Premadasa, who rendered an immeasurable service to the nation, was assassinated during a May Day rally in 1993.
