Private sector minimum wage increased by Rs. 2500

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The cabinet has approved to increase the minimum wage in the private sector by Rs. 2500. The current minimum wage in the private sector is at Rs. 10 000 and with this cabinet approval, it would be increased to Rs. 12 500. Non-Cabinet Minister of Labour and Trade Union Relations, Ravindra Samaraweera mentioned that the ministry would formulate required laws to increase the daily wage of an employee in the private sector to Rs. 500 from Rs. 400 as the Cabinet approval demands. The minister also noted that the act is to be debated in the parliament for the approval.
