COLOMBO (News 1st) - Borella Traffic OIC IP Ananda Sagara Sarathchandra who was critically injured in a hit and run accident in Bambalapitiya died last night (March 09) while still receiving treatment at the ICU of the National Hospital. The IP died last night (March 09) after being in an unconscious state for the past two weeks.
Eight suspects were arrested over the incident. The arrested group included the son of MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage, a councillor of the Colombo Municipal Council and a son of a police superintendent. Seven of the eight suspects were released on bail on the 26th of last month. However, the magistrate ordered that the driver of the vehicle Udesh Ratnayake to be remanded till tomorrow (March 11).
The remains of IP Sarathchandra will be placed at a private funeral parlour in Borella and the funeral will be held at the Borella public cemetery tomorrow (March 11).
Deputy Inspector General - Police Traffic Division Attorney-at-Law Ajith Rohana noted they have decided to take extra measures to stop the culture of driving defenders around night clubs under the influence of alcohol.
He also noted that the main suspect, a son of a superintendent of Police, had been remanded after being produced before the court following the close scrutiny of the video and personal evidence.
He added that rumours are being spread across social media by several users regarding this matter and the police had acquired the IP addresses of these individuals. He stressed that the police intends to produce them in court as witnesses, so they could inform judges how they came to the assumption that someone else was driving the defender.
