OIC hit & run: Suspect surrenders to the police

Colombo (News 1st): The Defender involved in a hit and run, injuring the Borella Traffic Police OIC was discovered from a house in Pelawatte, Battaramulla this afternoon. Police said the owners of the house were not in at the time of the discovery. The Traffic OIC of the Borella Police, IP Sarathchandra was run over in Bambalapitiya at around 04:30 AM today (Feb 24) when he was on his way from Borella to Bambalapitiya on his motorcycle to report for duty. The Defender in question fled the area after the accident. Meanwhile, the traffic OIC who was seriously injured is being treated at the ICU of the Colombo National Hospital. Authorities state that he is in critical condition. The police have been able to discover the suspected vehicle WP FZ 9143 parked near a house in Pelawatta. Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara noted that based on the operations carried out, it has been revealed that the SUV had run a red light. Investigations conducted using CCTV footage revealed the location of the SUV. He went onto note that a statement is being recorded from the registered owner of the vehicle, who was identified as Ranchigoda Aarachchige Visitha Sri Wijesekara a resident of Colpetty. SP Gunasekara said the person who had driven the vehicle had surrendered himself to the Bambalapitiya Police and he has been taken into Police custody. The spokesperson noted that further investigations are underway to determine whether the surrendered person actually drove the vehicle and to find out who was inside the vehicle at the time of the accident.
