Colombo (News 1st): A group of SLPP Southern Provincial Councilors who arrived at the council meeting today (Feb 22) voiced their opposition against the postponing of the provincial council elections. The News 1st correspondent in the area stated that when the group of Councillors arrived at the Southern Provincial Council, its gates had been closed. After the gates were opened the demonstration continued at the Provincial Council premises. Southern Provincial Councilor of the SLPP Ariyawansha Shammu noted that the Election Commissioner and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe are passing the buck to each other. They urged Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and his government to hold the provincial council elections as soon as possible, and strengthen democracy in the country. More than Rs. 200,000 is spent per day on meetings held at the Southern Provincial Council. The Western Provincial Council was postponed to March 6th yesterday, due to the lack of quorum in the House. The Western PC spends over Rs. 500,000 for meetings per day. Isn't this a waste of public funds? And is this where the PCs waste 85% of their funds?
