Colombo (News 1st): The Inter University Students Federation convened a media briefing in Colombo today (Feb 22). Speaking at the briefing Convenor of the Federation Maheel Bandara said that they strongly condemn the attack launched against the student's movement.
He added that the attack went beyond tear gas and water cannons and the students were attacked with hot water. He pointed out that they had applied grease on the barriers, to stop them from breaching it. He went onto note that Ranil Wickremesinghe will feel the pain caused by this very soon.
Bandara noted that the students are enrolled for a special degree at the management faculty of the South Eastern University. The management of the university has accepted that there are no professors for this special degree and physically there is no department. They questioned as to what happened to the good image of the university.
Maheel Bandara went onto note that although the professors are not there at the South Eastern University the police are there in full force. The South Eastern University has suspended a number of their brothers and sisters. He noted that they have one thing they would like to tell Ranil Wickremesinghe who speaks like the father of education, the father of democracy, and the rulers of the country who are trying to appear clean after the elections - the student movement cannot be eradicated.
He said the rulers of this country have decided to take this programme of eradication outside the university and into society. When a movement begins demanding for rights, the eradication begins immediately. Bandara stressed that this programme of eradication must be stopped and the university students and the society must be treated justly. If not he noted that this fight will continue and become the next movement that sends the government of Ranil Wickremesinghe packing home.
