Kinniya Incident: Police record statements from Navy

Colombo (News1st): The Police stated that statements have been recorded from 7 Navy personnel in connection to the tense situation which took place when the Sri Lanka Navy launched a raid in Trincomalee on Tuesday (Jan 29) morning to shut down illegal sand mining. Police added that statements will also be recorded from area residents and police personnel today (Jan 31), with regard to the situation. 12 navy personnel were injured when protesting sand-miners and area resident pelted stones at them. The body of the second man who jumped into the Mahaweli River in Kinniya, following the Naval operation was discovered last afternoon (Jan 30). The deceased was a 19-year-old resident of Kinniya.
