The media is attacking us - Sarath Fonseka

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Parliamentarian Sarath Fonseka commenting on the so-called media freedom granted by the United National Party government says that there is a buffalo on their side who claims that he (Fonseka) killed Lasantha Wickramatunga. Speaking at a UNP Balamandala meeting in Yapahuwa Fonseka said that although the government (UNP) had granted media freedom,  the media has now resorted to attacking them. Although the United National Party boasts about the so-called media freedom they granted, their ulterior motives were revealed through the 19th amendment to the constitution. Apart from the reduction of the powers vested in the President through the constitution, they also attempted to hinder media freedom. These attempts were made futile when we prevented it from being implemented through a court order. It was Ranga Kalansooriya a well-known figure from an NGO who was appointed as the Director General of the Government Information Department, the chief government position for media. When such attempts were made to hinder media freedom, not a single civil organization came forward to fight against the cause.
