COLOMBO (News 1st) - Video footage of a wild elephant attacking a person who had provoked it is currently circulating on social media.
The deceased was leading a group of tourists to see the wild elephants on the Weheragala border in Yala.
When the deceased a 41-year-old resident of Walimatagama, Kataragama had approached the elephant. The elephant charged at him and trampled him.
When News 1st inquired into the matter from a senior official at the Yala national park he said the deceased was intoxicated.
Chandana Sooriyabandara the Director General of the Department of Wildlife said that the act of getting down from a vehicle and idling at a national park is against the law. He added that anyone who does something similar in future will be brought before the law.
