COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Disaster Mangement Centre (DMC) noted that 8500 displaced individuals continue to be housed at 52 locations due to the floods in the Northern province. Assistant director of the DMC Pradeep Kodippilli confirmed that over 44,000 individuals have been affected by the heavy showers in the Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, and Jaffna districts.
The Department of Meteorology noted that there is a decrease in the rainfall affecting the Northern province, but they have also forecasted intermittent showers for the area.
19,841 people who were displaced by rains in the Kilinochchi district are currently housed at 28 camps that have been set up by the DMC.
19,858 individuals belonging to 6,254 families were affected by the heavy rains in the Mullaitivu district. 4253 individuals from the district continue to be housed at 28 camps.
Meanwhile, the spill gates of the Ranjanganaya, Angamuwa and Deduru reservoirs which were opened following heavy showers, continue to remain open and the DMC has requested the public living in low lying areas to be vigilant.
