Retired Major General Amal Karunasekara granted bail

Colombo (News1st) - Former Military Intelligence Chief, Retired Major General Amal Karunasekara was granted bail today (September 10) by the Mount Lavinia Magistrate's Court. The retired Major General was remanded over the abduction and assault of Journalist Keith Noyahr. He was released on three sureties of Rs. 10 Million each. The Additional Magistrate stressed that one surety should be by an executive grade officer in the public service. Karunasekara is also barred from travelling overseas. During the previous hearing, an order was made to record a statement once again from retired Major General Karunasekara, due to a contradiction in a statement made by a defence counsel. The recorded statement was produced in court today. Based on the contents of that statement, the Mount Lavinia Magistrate's Court permitted the Criminal Investigations Department to once again record statements from former Army Commander and Present Minister Sarath Fonseka, and Former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa in connection to the case filed over the abduction of journalist Keith Noyahr. The case is to be taken up against on the 25th of this month
