President meets PM Modi on BIMSTEC sidelines

COLOMBO (News 1st) - President Maithripala Sirisena met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today (August 30) in Nepal in line with the BIMSTEC Summit. The summit commenced today with the aim of developing the Technical and Economic partnership between the nations around the Bay of Bengal region. The leaders attending the summit are to adopt the 4th BIMSTEC Summit Declaration ‘Towards a Peaceful, Prosperous and Sustainable Bay of Bengal Region. Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand along with 7 other South East Asian Nations are present at this Summit. Indian Prime Minister Modi commended the efforts of President Maithripala Sirisena to sustain the countries Independence and Democracy when they met each other at the Summit. The President's Media Division announced that, at the conclusion of the summit, the Chairmanship of BIMSTEC will be handed over to Sri Lanka by the current Chair, Nepal. Furthermore, Prime Minister Modi said that he is ready to undertake any task allocated to him by President Maithripala Sirisena as the Chairman of BIMSTEC and that it will be a strong organization under the leadership President Maithripala Sirisena. President Maithripala Sirisena also met President of Myanmar Win Myint.
