US President Donald Trump has publicly invited Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) boss Dana White to take on the role of White House press secretary in a social media post on Truth Social.

In his post on Saturday afternoon, President Trump called White "a violent Fighter and Warrior" and asked him to bring several high-profile UFC fighters along to assist him in the position.

"I am pleased to announce that the Great Dana White, a violent Fighter and Warrior, has been offered the job of Press Secretary of the United States," Trump wrote.

"I have requested that he bring with him assistants, even though some are not from our Country, of Islam Makhachev, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Justin Gaethje, Daniel Cormier, Amanda Nunes, and Kayla Harris. We need these people to defend us against the Lunatic Left. Dana will be a Press Secretary like none other. Dana, please take the job! President DONALD J. TRUMP"

While it remains unclear whether the public offer was genuine, White addressed the post later on Saturday, stating, "I'm going to meet with him, we have a meeting on Monday".

The role of White House press secretary has been open since mid-October, when Katie Zacharia quit less than five days into the job. Trump's social media offer comes shortly after fellow Republicans lost their congressional majorities in the US midterm elections.

If White accepts, he will not be the only former UFC staff member in the White House press office. Current White House Director of Communications Steven Cheung previously worked as a spokesperson for White's organization from 2013 to 2016.

Trump has built close ties with the mixed martial arts organization in recent years, attending multiple UFC events. In June, the White House hosted a night of UFC fights as part of the celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of US independence.
