COLOMBO (News 1st) - Deepawali, regarded as one of the most vibrant cultural festivals of Hindus, is being celebrated today.

Lighting rows of oil lamps is one of the most cherished traditions associated with the festival.

Deepawali is traditionally celebrated to mark the victory of Lord Vishnu over the demon Narakasura.

The day is also regarded as a symbol of the triumph of righteousness over evil.

Hindu devotees celebrate the occasion by lighting oil lamps, creating colourful kolam designs, sharing Pongal rice and engaging in religious observances with great devotion.

According to Vedic literature, Narakasura had asked Lord Vishnu to ensure that all the worlds, not just himself, would be blessed with light.

Carrying this spirit of spreading light and happiness to everyone, Hindu devotees are engaging in religious observances today, praying for peace and prosperity for all.

They also visit temples to light ghee lamps in remembrance of their departed relatives and celebrate Deepawali with traditional sweets and other delicacies.
