COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka's ambition to become a leading maritime and logistics hub in the Indian Ocean will depend not only on expanding terminals and infrastructure, but also on embracing cutting-edge digital technology, according to Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Janitha Ruwan Kodithuwakku.
Addressing a regional workshop on maritime digitalization, the Deputy Minister said Sri Lanka's growing role in global and regional supply chains requires a parallel investment in advanced technology to ensure the country remains competitive in an increasingly digital maritime industry.
"Sri Lanka's continued development as a maritime logistics hub requires us to strengthen our technological capabilities alongside our physical infrastructure. As we expand port capacity and enhance our role in regional and global supply chains, the adoption of advanced technologies is essential to maximizing the benefits of these investments and responding effectively to the evolving demands of international trade."
He noted that modern ports can no longer depend solely on larger terminals and improved physical facilities.
Instead, success increasingly depends on efficient information management, streamlined regulatory procedures and seamless coordination among the many stakeholders involved in maritime operations.
"Modern ports require more than expanded terminals and improved physical facilities. They also depend on efficient information management, streamlined regulatory procedures and effective coordination among the many stakeholders involved in maritime operations."
Kodithuwakku highlighted the importance of the Maritime Single Window and Port Community System, describing them as essential tools for modernizing Sri Lanka's ports.
A Maritime Single Window allows ships and their agents to submit required information electronically through a single entry point, significantly reducing bureaucracy and simplifying regulatory processes. Meanwhile, a Port Community System enables real-time information sharing among stakeholders across the port ecosystem, reducing delays, lowering costs and improving operational efficiency.
"Together, these digital solutions can enhance operational efficiency, strengthen competitiveness and contribute to a more efficient and reliable maritime transport system."
