COLOMBO (News 1st) – The bus driver and assistant arrested in connection with the collision between a bus and a train at the Koggala railway crossing yesterday, have been remanded until November 4.

The two suspects were remanded after being produced before the Galle Additional Magistrate today.

Police stated that six people injured in the accident are still receiving treatment in hospital.

The accident occurred yesterday when a bus collided with a train at the Koggala railway crossing, injuring 13 children.

The injured were among a group of students aged between 14 and 15 who were returning from a visit to the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum in Koggala. The group had travelled from Kottawa, on an excursion.

According to police, the bus crossed the railway line despite the railway warning signals being activated.

Meanwhile, residents have raised concerns about the safety of the railway crossing, describing it as a hazardous location.

They said that although warning signals are in place, the absence of a railway gate allows some drivers to cross without taking adequate precautions, putting road users at risk.
