COLOMBO (News 1st) - The carcass of Tusker Kawantissa, is to be examined by a panel of experts from the University of Peradeniya to determine the cause of its death.

The Department of Wildlife Conservation stated that it would present the relevant facts before court today to obtain an order to examine the remains.

Kawantissa was known as one of the largest and tallest wild elephants in Sri Lanka.

Kawantissa, who was suffering from severe injuries from a gunshot, passed away yesterday despite round-the-clock treatment by specialist veterinary teams from the Department.

Although the gunshot wound on its front right leg had begun to heal, the tusker’s condition deteriorated due to dehydration after it refused to eat, ultimately leading to its death.
