COLOMBO (News 1st): Today marks International Children’s Day.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake says children are the nation’s most valuable asset, and protecting their lives is therefore a primary responsibility of any government.

In his message on International Children’s Day, President Dissanayake said the government’s key objective is to ensure that no child is left behind in building a new Sri Lanka, while providing every child with a safe environment and opportunities to develop their full potential.

He stressed that a child’s race, religion, economic status or geographical background should not become a barrier to their education.

The President also said skills-based education reforms are already being introduced to transform the education system, while ensuring that education does not become a burden for parents or a source of distress for children.

He further said the 'Ratama Ekata - A Nation United' national operation has been launched with the participation of all sectors of society to release the younger generation from the threat of illicit drugs and safeguard their future.
