Taylor Swift sets record for most wins at MTV Video Music Awards

Another awards show, another record for Taylor Swift.

The pop superstar made MTV Video Music Awards history at the 2026 ceremony, becoming the show's most-awarded artist after receiving the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors. She then went on to win Video of the Year and Best Direction. The milestone victory broke her tie with Beyoncé at 30 wins, giving her sole possession of the all-time record.

The achievement adds yet another milestone to Swift's decorated VMA career. She entered the night with nine nominations, including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, and several craft categories, trailing only Madonna among this year's nominees.

Swift entered the 2026 ceremony tied with Beyoncé at 30 overall wins. Swift officially broke the record when she took home the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, which marked her 31st career VMA and gave her sole possession of the title as the most-awarded artist in MTV history.

Swift went on to win Video of the Year for "Fate of Ophelia" and Best Direction to bring her total wins to 33.

Beyoncé first set the record a decade earlier at the 2016 VMAs, where her "Lemonade" visual album earned eight trophies, surpassing Madonna's long-held record of 20 wins. Beyoncé and Swift remained tied at 30 until Swift's win Sunday night.

The MTV VMA Artist Director Honors was introduced this year to celebrate music artists who have developed a distinct directorial voice and expanded the possibilities of music video storytelling. Swift became the first-ever recipient.

In announcing the honor, MTV and CBS said the award recognizes groundbreaking artists whose work behind the camera has advanced the art of visual storytelling.

Swift entered the ceremony with nine nominations, including nods for Video of the Year and Artist of the Year.

She was the second-most nominated artist at the show behind Madonna, who led the field with 11 nominations.

During the ceremony, Swift debuted the music video for "Patient Zero," which she directed herself. The video stars Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson.

The 2026 ceremony marked another major achievement for Swift, who has spent years building one of the most successful VMA careers in the awards show's history.

Now, she stands alone at the top of the MTV Video Music Awards record books as the most-awarded artist the ceremony has ever seen.
