High-Speed Escape Ends in Arrest After Police Shoot at Vehicle Tyre

COLOMBO (News 1st); A motor vehicle that allegedly failed to stop on police orders was intercepted after officers opened fire at one of its tyres during a dramatic pursuit that began in Giriulla and ended near Pannala.

Police said the vehicle had been identified based on intelligence indicating it was being used to transport narcotics. However, the driver had allegedly ignored instructions to stop and instead sped away from the area.

The officers involved in the operation then pursued the vehicle and eventually brought it to a halt near Pannala after firing at one of its tyres, police said.

According to police, three occupants of the vehicle, including two women, were taken into custody following the operation.

Police further stated that the suspects initially refused to open the vehicle doors, prompting officers to break the door locks in order to carry out the arrests.

A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of nearly five grams of narcotics, police said.

The suspects arrested are a 37-year-old man and two women aged 38 and 16.

Police said investigations into the suspects are currently underway.
