Eating, Loud Music, Feet on Seats? Singapore Brings Tough New Bus Rules

COLOMBO (News 1st); Singapore will introduce tough new regulations targeting disruptive and nuisance behaviour on public buses and at bus interchanges from September 23, 2026, as authorities move to make public transport journeys safer and more pleasant for commuters.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced that a range of behaviours that cause annoyance, discomfort, obstruction or danger to other passengers will become offences under the new regulations.

Under the new rules, commuters could face enforcement action for placing their feet or footwear on any part of a bus other than the floor, playing audio at excessively loud volumes, causing obstruction or danger to others, eating or drinking onboard buses, and littering.

According to the LTA, public transport staff will first advise offenders to stop the behaviour. Those who refuse to comply may be asked to leave the bus or could be issued with an administrative Notification of Offence (NOO) by ticket inspectors or bus interchange staff.

Following investigations, non-compliant commuters could face fines of up to S$5,000 for more serious offences. Authorities also warned that repeat offenders may be subject to higher penalties.
