30,919 Mosquito Breeding Sites Found So Far This Year

COLOMBO (News 1st): The National Dengue Control Unit says 30,919 premises with mosquito larvae or potential mosquito-breeding sites have been identified from January to the third week of August this year.

Entomologist Sakunthala Janaki stated that 355,683 premises across 5,863 Grama Niladhari divisions were inspected.

A total of 1,416 school premises were inspected, with 555 mosquito-breeding sites identified.

The National Dengue Control Unit also said mosquito-breeding sites were found at 579 government institutions out of 2,298 premises inspected.

Meanwhile, 306,960 residential premises were inspected, with mosquito-breeding sites identified at 26,234 of them.

The National Dengue Control Unit says accumulated waste and stagnant water were identified as major contributors to mosquito breeding.

Community Physician Dr. Prasheela Samaraweera said instructions have been issued to local authorities through the Presidential Secretariat on waste management, with the aim of reducing mosquito breeding.
