COLOMBO (News 1st): The National System Operator Company states that the water levels in reservoirs used for hydroelectric power generation are currently at approximately 67% capacity.

The company said this water volume is sufficient to meet hydroelectricity generation requirements until October.

It added that the current water levels have been maintained due to rainfall received in the upper catchment areas of hydroelectric power plants.

The National System Operator Company further stated that future decisions on hydroelectric power generation will be made based on upcoming weather patterns and rainfall conditions.

Meanwhile, the Department of Irrigation states that the overall water capacity of major reservoirs across the island is currently around 50%.

Director of the Water Management Unit of the Department of Irrigation, H.M.P.S.D. Herath, said the water storage capacity of reservoirs managed by the department has currently declined to 35%.
