PM Wants Classrooms to Focus on Skills, Not Just Exams

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka's education and assessment system must move beyond its long-standing examination-centric approach and evolve into a framework that promotes skills, creativity, experiential learning and the holistic development of students, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has said.

The Prime Minister made these remarks while participating in a recent public lecture in Colombo titled "250 Years of Educational Excellence: Lessons from a Sri Lankan American."

The event was organized by the United States-Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission and brought together education stakeholders, academics and policymakers to discuss the future direction of education.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Amarasuriya said one of the key objectives of the education reforms currently being implemented by the Government is to move beyond a system that primarily measures student achievement through examinations.

According to the Prime Minister, the reforms are focused on introducing activity-based and experience-based teaching and learning methods designed to better prepare students for the demands of the modern world.

The Prime Minister also stressed that the Government does not intend to discard the successful elements of the existing education system.

Instead, she explained that the objective of the ongoing reforms is to modernise the current system while preserving its strengths and adapting it to meet contemporary and future requirements.
