COLOMBO (News 1st); The Joint Opposition says the proposed 22nd Constitutional Amendment will not have any adverse impact on the sovereignty of the people or the fundamental structure of the Constitution.
The position was outlined in a statement issued by the Joint Opposition regarding the draft 22nd Constitutional Amendment.
According to the statement, various defeated politicians, political party activists and organizations have alleged that the proposed 22nd Constitutional Amendment could negatively affect the sovereignty of the people and the independence of the judiciary.
The statement further notes that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has pledged to ensure that the law is enforced against individuals involved in corruption, fraud and irregularities and, where existing laws are insufficient, to introduce the necessary legal provisions to enable action to be taken against them.
The Joint Opposition also stated that it is prepared to extend its full support towards the introduction of laws and legal provisions required to take action against individuals involved in corruption and fraud, in line with the public mandate received by the Government.
