Dengue Cases Surge Past 90,000 In Sri Lanka

COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lanka has recorded 90,306 dengue cases so far this year, according to the National Dengue Control Unit.

The highest number of infections has been reported from the Western Province, which accounts for 52.96 percent of all reported cases.

Health authorities said 65 dengue-related deaths have been recorded during the same period.

The highest monthly case count of the year was reported in July, when 29,973 patients were diagnosed with the mosquito-borne disease.

The upward trend has continued into August, with 4,959 cases reported during the first few days of the month alone.

Officials also noted that 119 Medical Officer of Health divisions across the country have been identified as high-risk dengue zones.

Community Medicine Specialist Dr. Prashila Samaraweera of the National Dengue Control Unit has urged the public to remain vigilant, particularly in light of the prevailing rainy weather conditions.
