Sri Lanka CERT Warns of Social Media Extortion Scams

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team says it has received reports of extortion attempts carried out through social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Messenger.

Information Security Engineer of Sri Lanka CERT Charuka Damunupola said scammers deceive people into sharing sensitive photos or videos and then demand money, threatening to release the content on social media.

He urged the public not to respond to messages or requests from unknown individuals.

He further advised anyone who falls victim to such a scam should immediately report it to the nearest police station.
