COLOMBO (News 1st); Cabinet approval has been granted to publish the draft 22nd Amendment to the Constitution Bill and the draft Judicature (Amendment) Bill in the Government Gazette and subsequently present them to Parliament.

Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the proposed amendments are aimed at further strengthening the independence of the judiciary while improving the efficiency of the justice system in addressing the large number of pending court cases.

He stated that Cabinet approval was granted at its meeting on July 27, 2026, to prepare draft amendments to both the Constitution and the Judicature Act in line with those objectives.

According to the Minister, the Legal Draftsman's Department subsequently prepared the draft 22nd Amendment to the Constitution Bill and the draft Judicature (Amendment) Bill, while the Attorney General has already cleared both draft laws with regard to their constitutionality.

Dr. Jayatissa said the proposal submitted by the Minister of Justice and National Integration to publish the draft bills in the Government Gazette and thereafter present them to Parliament for approval received Cabinet endorsement at yesterday's meeting.
