COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, Dr. Susil Ranasinghe says a programme has been launched to improve and streamline water supply services in the Western Province.

He stated that the Western province has around 1.3 million water supply connections, facilitating the supply of water to more than five million people.

However, the Minister noted that challenges have emerged in ensuring a regular water supply in some areas due to high demand and weaknesses in the existing distribution network.

Accordingly, steps have been initiated to increase the capacity of the Horana-Kadana Water Treatment Plant.

Under this programme, a new water treatment facility with a capacity of 3,500 cubic metres per day will be constructed.

Minister Ranasinghe added that the outdated pumps at the pumping station will also be upgraded.

Through these improvements, plans are in place to provide water supply facilities to more than 40,000 people in areas including Bulathsinhala and Millaniya in the Kalutara District.

The Minister further stated that the modernization of the ageing water pipeline system from Labugama to Colombo has also commenced.
